Kano declares September 1 public holiday for Takutaha celebration

The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, September 1, 2026, a work-free day across the state to enable residents to participate in the Takutaha celebration.

The declaration was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and communicated in a government circular addressed to senior officials. The circular covered the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the State Government, commissioners, permanent secretaries, heads of boards and commissions, local government audit authorities, and chief executives of state-owned agencies and companies.

Takutaha falls on the 19th of Rabi’ul Awwal in the Islamic calendar. The state government said the annual traditional and religious occasion holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for the people of Kano.

The government urged civil servants to use the holiday for prayers, supplications and spiritual reflection. It said the prayers should particularly seek divine blessings for continued peace, unity, stability and prosperity in Kano State and Nigeria.

The declaration applies to the work schedule for the stated date, while essential services will continue to operate in accordance with established procedures.
